Native Bird and Foliage Tattoo
Perched a curved-beak native bird on a branch and ringed it with ferns, blossoms and tropical fronds. I leaned on line-and-dot work and stippled greywash rather than solid fills, so the bird sits believably in its setting and the foliage breathes around it. Wrapping the design around the canvas gave the composition room to read from multiple angles.
Illustrative full coverage pieces like this depend on negative space as much as the lines themselves. If foliage fills every gap the bird gets lost. Too much skin showing and the piece looks unfinished. I plan the layout around the underlying muscle line so the focal point falls where the eye naturally rests. Taking custom nature pieces at my Wellington studio.
