King Penguin Pair Tattoo

Inked two king penguins across this client so the pair reads as a single line-and-dot composition when both sit side by side. I arced the long beaks upward and used soft stippled shading to give the heads volume without resorting to heavy black fill. Dropped a short black accent below each bird to ground the silhouettes.

Pairing illustrative wildlife across two sides of the body only works when both will actually be visible together. I planned the placement around the underlying muscle line so the birds hold their shape through movement. Booking illustrative work out of my Wellington studio.

Common Questions About Line & Dots in Wellington

How small can a fine line tattoo go?
Around 3 to 4cm at the smallest before detail loss becomes a real long-term risk. Tiny tattoos that look crisp in the photo often blur out within a few years, so I'll usually suggest the minimum size that gives a piece room to breathe.
Where on the body does fine line hold up best?
Upper arm, outer forearm, thigh, and back placements hold fine line work best. Hands, fingers, feet, and ribs see more skin turnover and movement, so detailed fine line in those spots softens faster.
Does dotwork hurt more than line work?
Slightly different sensation rather than more painful. Dotwork is a stippled tapping motion versus a continuous line. Most people find longer dotwork sessions easier to sit through than dense black-fill sessions.
