Blackwork Peony and Water Tattoo
A Japanese-inspired half sleeve worked in heavy blackwork. I saturated the upper arm in solid black and pulled the peony blooms and the running water lines out in negative space, so the grey-washed flowers and the pale current read as light against the dark field rather than the other way round. The black is the canvas here, not the subject.
Negative-space work at this density is unforgiving. The fill has to lay flat and even across the whole arm for the water and petals to stay crisp, which takes multiple sessions. Built this way, the piece keeps its contrast as it ages, because the bold black ground holds while the finer grey settles.
